How do you Harvest Rice?

My brother-in-law Francis holding up the bountiful harvest! RICE! In the Philippines rice in the field is called “palay.” Milled rice in the sack is called “bigas.” Finally, when cooked up it’s called “kanin.”

And, just how do you harvest rice?

Not sure.  But, somehow I feel like I’m a part of the rice harvest this year.

You see, my wife and I have a 1500 square meter block of land in the Philippines that my brother-in-law Francis and sister-in-law Rose use to plant rice.  The land is located in Sual, Pangasinan about a 4 hour drive north of Manila.  You can look out from our front porch and see Lingayen Gulf.

We were in the Philippines this past April and May and while there I asked my niece Robie Ann and nephew Zaldy to take pictures of the planted rice and send them to me.  Well, the pictures have come in!

The rice crop is looking exceptionally good this year!  At least to me it does.  Remember, I don’t know anything about planting or cultivating or harvesting rice.  The only thing I really know about rice is how to eat it!  Lots of it!
