Pacman Rap!

What do I know about rap music?

Not much.

But, when asked a few weeks ago to come up with a performance for the Philippine Independence Day celebration this June, I decided to look into this “rap” thing.  I figured it would be fun – or should I say funny – for an old man like me to do some rapping.

And, I do have a bit of experience; last year I did a rap song with my daughter and it was a lot of fun and well received by the audience.  So, I figured – why not do another one this year.

Now I just had to figure out what song?  Hmmmmm …

Got it!

I remembered a song from the early 90s that was a big hit in the Philippines by Andrew E. called “Mahirap Ang Maging Pogi.”  Translation:  It’s hard/difficult to be good looking.  When I was visiting the Philippines back then this song was played on the radio a lot; the kids loved it; they sang it; after a few days I couldn’t get it out of my mind.  It’s a rap song.

So, this is the song I picked to perform this year.  But, there’s one problem … all the words are in Tagalog.  I soon found I was having some doubts about learning all the words in only one month.  I started looking for a way out.

I found one.

I’ll take this Tagalog song and put English words to it; that will make it easier for me.

But that just introduced another problem – now I had to come up with some words!

Well, the recent Manny Pacquiao fight gave me the inspiration I needed.  The more I thought about it, the more it made sense … Yeah, just change the chorus to “Mahirap Ang Maging Pacman.”  Now to get some words to go with my new found chorus … ?

Anyway, I did it and the video in this post is what I’ve come up with.  Hopefully, I’ll be performing my new rap at the upcoming Philippine celebration here in Alice Springs this coming June.

I had a lot of fun putting this together; I hope you enjoy it.

Go Pacman!
