US Presidential Elections: Maybe it’s time for a change?

Is this funny or true?

I’m not talking about the old political battle cry, “Change is good!”  Get rid of the old person and get a new one in there.  I’m not talking about getting new leaders.

I’m talking about changing the way we elect our leaders.

Radical, I know.

But, let’s face it.  The current system in the US, seems to be  … what would be a good word or phrase … let me see … how about …

  • Unmanageable?
  • Unreasonable?
  • Unweildy?
  • Unfair?
  • Not working?
  • Way too costly?
  • Overly time consuming?
  • Just plain ridiculous?

And, yes, this is where you appropriately ask the question, “Got a better idea pal?”

And, my answer is an unimaginative, “Not really.”

But, may I suggest we put our thinking caps on and look for a better way?

Can we at least admit that the current system could use a tune up?

I’ve heard it said, “You first have to admit you have a problem before you can start seriously looking for a solution.”

So, is there a problem?

Is the current US election system breaking down and in need of some repairs or maybe a complete overhaul?

Has the current system done too many miles?  Do we need to bring the election engine into the repair shop and begin work?

Or, do we need to design a whole new engine?  A new engine that embraces and uses modern technologies leading to a more streamlined design?

Too radical?

Probably.

But, when I contemplate the time and money being spent for the candidates running for president, it makes me wonder.  Are we doing it the right way?  Is there a better way?

There just has to be.

And, maybe we should start with the easy suggestions first; the low hanging fruit as they say.  The obvious ideas.

For instance, why not just limit the spending, the giving, the donating.  Limit it to a nice easy number like – ZERO.

Then have the candidates get their message out via the grass roots and let the people hear the straight message.  Maybe a message that isn’t drowned out by special interest money.  May just a clear message based on what’s best for the country and not what’s best for a politician, political party and/or special interest group.

Too radical?

Probably.

But, I thought I should at least offer one suggestion since I brought up the discussion.

Over to you!
