I wasn’t born in Alice Springs but I got here as soon as I could

Here’s the story that goes with my tag line …

How do you go from growing up in a log cabin in the back woods of New Hampshire to the Central Australian outback?

It’s a long story.

I like to say, “I wasn’t born in Alice Springs but I got here as soon as I could.”

Why?

Why not? After all, you gotta live someplace. And, besides, I like it here. I like the lifestyle.

Are there better places to live?

Well, some people think so. For instance, I took a taxi drive in Melbourne once and the driver wasn’t as thrilled about Alice Springs as I am. Here’s a snippet of our conversation …

Taxi Driver: Where are you from?
Me: Well, I live in Alice Springs.
Taxi Driver: … silence
Me: Have you ever been to Alice Springs?
Taxi Driver: Why would anyone want to go to Alice Springs?

I figure, my Melbourne taxi driver summed up the prevailing attitude held by many people about Alice Springs.

Well, like I said, you gotta live somewhere, and I happen to live in Alice Springs … by choice. Maybe not everyone’s ‘cup of tea’ but I like it.

If you want to know more about my story … how I went from log cabin in New Hampshire to the central Australian outback then have a listen to the ABC “Desert Tracks” radio interview link below.
