Answer: When your daughter makes it official!
I recently discovered I’m old. Let me tell you how this discovery came about.
It happened one early evening. I sat in the comfortable chair in our living room, quietly watching TV, minding my own business, not bothering anyone, causing no trouble, and generally, being a ‘good boy.’ Then my twenty five year old daughter walks past and throws a standard white envelope in my lap and delivers a proclamation as follows:
You are officially old!
I had thoughts as follows, ‘Huh? Old? What? Officially old? What’s she talking about?’
I tore into the envelope and found a white plastic card and read the words printed in bold across the center, ‘SENIORS CARD.’
Then I remembered, a few weeks earlier, shortly after my sixtieth birthday, I applied for a ‘senior’s card.’ I figured, ‘fifteen bucks of car registration, why not?’
That’s when my daughter’s proclamation came into clear view. She announced it. She made sure I knew it’s official – no more wondering, no more guessing, no more denying. No sir, holding my brand new senior’s card, I had to admit – I’m officially old.
If I had known getting my seniors card would make me ‘officially old’ I would have skipped it – rather pay the extra fifteen bucks on my car registration!
And that’s the story of how I found out ‘I’m old.’ Not the prettiest, smoothest, cleanest, happiest way, but my daughter made sure I found out. She told me straight, no holding back. And because of her straight forward approach, I now know. If she hadn’t told me I’d still be walking the earth thinking, ‘I ain’t old!’ But, thanks to my daughter, such delusional thoughts have been discarded, not longer entertained. I’m into reality, and I’ve accepted my reality. My reality is this – I’m officially old!
